As part of our 5-year engagement by the Shire of Capel for ongoing architectural services, Gresley Abas became involved in the planning of the sporting centre of Boyanup, a small town within the Shire. This project identified areas where existing facilities were not of a standard to meet the town’s current needs and also mapped out what would be required in the future.

The site had a variety of existing uses including a community centre, a primary school site, a weekly farmer’s market, a WW2 memorial as well as housing most, if not all of the sporting recreational facilities of the town.

The major challenge of this project was clearly identifying the community’s needs and balancing the intended uses of often conflicting activities. The site is located next to the Preston River, a conservation management category wetland, which necessitated a design solution and drainage strategy that wouldn’t impact this ecologically important site

Community consultation was an important part of the process. Gresley Abas met with groups from the sporting clubs, school and other stakeholders to fully understand the values that the community had invested in this site.

These values and needs were then assessed thoroughly to produce a master plan that, through sustainable planning, will cater for the projected population of the town over the next 30 years.
