Gen Y Demonstration House

In 2013 Gresley Abas entered the ‘Gen Y’ Competition, which was a design competition initiated by Landcorp in association with the City of Fremantle, the Institute of Architects and the Office of the Government Architect to explore innovative ideas and concept designs suited to the needs of the next generation of home buyers.

The brief for the ‘Gen Y’ Demonstration House Competition called for a concept design for a dwelling that integrated opportunities for affordable living and addressed the needs of the ‘Gen Y’ lifestyle, while at the same time providing innovative, cost effective and sustainable design solutions, services, materials and construction methods to suit the needs of the next generation of home buyers.

A detailed understanding of context was critical as well as a clear logic for flexible and adaptable design for the proposed dwelling.

The competition sought proposals for new, innovative grouped housing models which challenged the status quo in terms of ownership models, in an effort to provide real solutions to the issue of affordability in the housing market for the Gen Y population.

Gresley Abas were shortlisted in stage 1 of the competition, and were awarded second prize in the Stage 2 design competition.
