Kununurra Leisure Centre
Gresley Abas is working with the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley to redevelop the Kununurra Leisure Centre, transforming the ageing facility into a modern, climate-responsive hub for sport, recreation and community life in the East Kimberley.
Located within Kununurra’s broader leisure precinct alongside the Aquatic Centre, the project revitalises the existing building through targeted refurbishment and carefully integrated new additions. The design introduces a new foyer, reception and administration hub that improves wayfinding, visibility and connections between the indoor courts, gymnasium, squash courts and the outdoor aquatic facilities.
Responding to the Kimberley climate, the architecture emphasises shaded gathering spaces, improved indoor–outdoor connections and robust materials suited to the region’s conditions. These strategies create comfortable spaces for everyday community use while strengthening the building’s civic presence within Kununurra’s sporting precinct.
Developed through a staged delivery approach, the project ensures the Shire’s key priorities can be realised while working within funding constraints and maintaining ongoing operations. The redevelopment also enables the facility to operate as an Emergency Evacuation Centre, allowing the building to support the community during extreme weather events and regional emergencies.
