Wanneroo Recreation Centre Concept

Working with CCS Strategic as lead consultant, Gresley Abas were engaged in 2022 to provide a high-level Concept Design for the redevelopment of the existing Recreation Centre infrastructure at Scenic Park In Wanneroo.

The existing sports hall and associated facilities were almost 40 years old and the City of Wanneroo had identified the need to expand and develop these facilities to meet community need.

Our challenge in this project was develop a concept design to address a wide range of needs on an existing lakeside site. Minimising the disturbance to this landscape setting was important, as was acknowledging the impact on nearby residential area. Functionality and sensible co-location drove the concept design of new basketball courts with associated spaces for boxing and callisthenics, change facilities, storage and kitchen.

Opportunities to create a sense of place and identity for the precinct were developed in the concept plan with thoughtful design of entry and access points. Emphasising an inviting and attractive community environment, the selection of materials and colours for the project was influenced accordingly. Locations for local community ownership of artwork or graphic expression are suggested in the proposed architectural forms which are deliberately kept low towards the street address, mediating the bulk of the new courts in the existing wooded, lakeside environment.
