Wickham Community Hub

Gresley Abas with the City of Karratha and the Community of Wickham have delivered this significant piece of social infrastructure. Our design is based on the interconnection of existing and adjacent community facilities, providing a legible collection of external spaces. These spaces are protected from the harsh Pilbara sun by an extensive verandah space with the building oriented to capture valuable prevailing breezes.

External spaces provide an array of intimacy levels to satisfy all of the community’s needs regarding inclusive interaction and requirements for privacy.

The environmentally responsive design provides healthy and inclusive spaces that promote inter-generational and inter-cultural engagement, complimenting the progressive and active community of Wickham.

The scope of this project combines the renewal of existing community infrastructure, the creation of adjacent and complementary facilities and the delivery of new community facilities. The refurbishment includes maintenance to the existing 40-year-old squash club and refurbishment to the existing town hall, transforming it into a high-impact sports centre. Future stages of the project include a new splash pad adjacent to the existing public pool and a public playground to provide local kids with an opportunity for sensory water play.

The Wickham Community Hub provides a central activity centre for the whole community and provides a lynchpin addition to the existing sports and leisure facilities creating a true social and recreational hub for the people of Wickham.
